How to make a “big ask”

Careers are made by asking questions of others. One of the hardest questions - a "big ask" - is asking someone for an opportunity. Here, the risk of rejection is the greatest, and it can be easier not to ask.  In this 3 minute interview with a young graduate who asked what she really wanted, Amy provides practical advice on how make a “big ask”.

It all starts with one step…

  • 5 mins: Write down your dream opportunity. Who would need to say "Yes" to make it happen? Jot down their names and your ideal scenario.

  • 30 mins: Spend 30 minutes practicing your pitch for the opportunity. Use a free tool like Yoodli to practice and get instant feedback or use an AI tool like ChatGPT to refine your approach.

  • 1 hour: Book a time with a trusted mentor or have a free coaching call to discuss your “big ask”. Afterward, schedule a meeting with the person who can make it happen.
